Storms on the way

A big storm winding up in the pacific

It's been a bit of a weird couple weeks, but it looks like the weather patterns are about to change in our favour if you like snow.

A 988mb low off the Alaska panhandle will direct the jet stream our way overnight Friday and into early Saturday, and into the future things are looking more like typical Feb. Precipitation will start by late day Friday as snow at first in the valley and turning to rain lower down sometime Saturday as freezing levels climb.

Alpine

Friday: Light snowfall increasing in the afternoon with as much as 30cm possible for coastal areas by Saturday morning. Freezing levels as high as 1300m, and moderate to strong southwesterly mountaintop winds.

Saturday: Another 20cm for coastal areas, but slightly less inland. Freezing levels dropping to 800-1000m, and moderate to strong southwesterly mountaintop winds

Sunday: A bit of a break in systems before the next one Sunday night.

Next week: More snow, stay tuned.

Bye Bye Sunshine!

Under all that new snow that is about to fall  is a variety of old snow surfaces, including faceted snow, and small surface hoar, but primarily hard crusts and ice layers so pay attention to the avalanche conditions as the weekend progresses as danger is forecast to increase....
